Techniques Of Modern Realist Acting

Master the deep, specific expression required to meet the demands of today’s acting industry.

A 12-week programme which covers the core teachings of Tom Kibbe, completed in two 6-week blocks. Each session is one-to-one with Tom via Zoom and is 1.5 hours.

The 12-Week Programme

You’ll learn to become more alive in the moment, and you’ll bring more presence to auditions as well as film and theatre roles. You’ll also discover how to prepare for roles quickly, and you’ll work on areas you need to refine or open up whether it’s voice, body, psyche, or imagination.

1: Defining acting for today’s industry

Discover how to bring a piece of text to life in the moment. This starts with learning to be truthful in the imaginary circumstances and honing your skills of observation so you can use your imagination with trained precision.

2: Creating the imaginary environment

Now we begin to build the imaginary environment and connect to the imaginary atmosphere. All of these specifics of place ground you and affect who you are as a character and the life you create in the imaginary circumstances.

3: Understanding the impact of “when”

Understand how to define the passage of time for your character and the emotional responses ignited by specific moments. You’ll learn to avoid the common mistake of focusing on the wrong moment and losing the immediacy of the scene.

4: Exploring the internal and external behaviours

We look at the body and the voice to discern the character’s specific physical actions and the different forms of communication. We also examine what is going on inside the character’s mind and how that influences the external behaviours.

5 : Tuning into the simplicity of why

We piece together all the aspects of the previous classes and root them in the simple – but vital – why. Through imagination and concentration you’ll go deep into the why of your character to bring to life a credible, meaningful performance.

6 : Examining the actor’s biggest question

To embody depth in your performance, you must dig into the question “Who is this character?” You’ll learn how to build a personality internally and externally through precise steps that transform specific information and key elements into a living character.

Break

7: Bringing yourself fully to the character

You’ll learn to develop your instrument and expression of self through the elements of voice, body, psyche, and imagination. This allows you to become more deeply involved as the character and more alive in the specific moment of the imaginary circumstances.

8: Releasing the actor’s voice

We want to access your inner voice, the voice infused with your specific values that communicates in a certain way to the people around you. Through your personal expression, this voice will elucidate the unique inner workings of the character.

9: Awakening the actor’s body

To become the character, you must free your physical body by breaking through the external shell moulded by your subconscious. We’ll work deeply on the cellular and neuron levels to open you to the impulses and actions true to the character.

10: Activating the character’s psyche

You’ll learn how to prepare the sensory and emotional aspects of yourself. This allows you to immerse yourself in the immediacy of the time and place of the scene and respond to the specific moment as the character would.

11: Revealing the depth of your imagination

There is specific work you must do to release your imagination and draw upon the innate depths of your talent. Once you know how to free your creative subconscious you’ll be able to explore deeper levels of your imaginary life.

12: Accepting that you’re ready

Everything you’ve learned has been for this moment. Now you’re ready to exist in a specific time and place as the character, trusting that the work is there for you. You’re not performing, but giving the character space to come alive.
